The following letter to Mrs. Harman B. Vanderhoef will be of interest to all those who contributed to United China Re lief: “Dear Mrs. Vanderhoef: “This will acknowledge your let ter of May 21st to Mr. W. R. Herod, president, United China Relief, Inc. “You will be interested to know that in obtaining 643.9% of your quota, you and your committee have done the No. 1 job in the Unites States in respect to over subscribing your quota. You will be sent a True Friend of China certificate as a token of your ap preciation. ^jWe wish again to thank you your committee on behalf of our entire staff and our Chinese allies for the splendid work you have done in Tryon. “Bayard M. Hedrick, “Campaign Director.” HELMS AT ROTARY M. R. McCown will have charge of the Tryon Rotary club pro gram on Friday at 1 p. m., at Sunnydale. Town Manager C. H. Helms, who attended the Civilian Defense meeting in Asheville which was addressed by Dr. Albert Coates of the Institute of Gov ernment. will give a talk on the results of the meeting. CURB REPORTER The weather on Wednesday was 59 low and 90 high, good old hot weather for swimming and crop growing.But think of that nice cool 59 low to sleep in ... . See from one of our New York re porters that Louis A. Ritz is spending a month or more at the New Weston hotel .... Marvin Geddings, Duke Power Co., agri cultural engineer, gave an inter esting talk at the Tryon Kiwanis club Tuesday and showed the value of electricity to the farmer, how it is making life on the farm easier, happier and more profit able. He said that a farmer doing work by hand that could be done by electricity is working for less than a cent an hour .... One of the cleverest announcements ever received in Tryon is that from Mr. and Mrs. Harry Marsh who announce their moving from 707 Greenwood, Wilmette, 111., to How ard Gap Road, Tryon, North Caro lina, after June 15th. As you open the folder paper doll cut out fig ures of the Marshes and their mother are shown on the left clos ing the door at Wilmette and with baggage in hand are following an arrow pointing to a photo of the Windsor-Griggs-Mitchell house thev bought here ....
